A BEE NAMED BEA and Other Poems by Candace Dietz

This is a review for a children’s book called A Bee Named Bea And Other Poems by Candace A Dietz. I was received one copy of  A Bee Named Bea And Other Poems of the book in exchange for this review and the thoughts in this review are all mine and my families.

Charlie is struggling with reading so I have been looking for books Charlie wouldn’t mind trying to read on his own. Since Charlie wasn’t sure what a poem was I was glad to be approached to conduct a review for A Bee Named Bea AND Other Poems. A Bee Named Bea AND Other Poems allowed Charlie to practice his reading and to see what a poem is firsthand.

A Bee Named Bea AND Other Poems alloweed Charlie and I to create our own poems and illustrate the poems  turning them into a book for my sister for Christmas. All in all A Bee Named Bea And Other Poems was a huge success. If you haven’t heard of A Bee Named Bea And Other Poems. I hope you take the time to check A Bee Named Bea AND Other Poems out as I am sure you will enjoy A Bee Named Bea AND Other Poems as much as we did.

A Butterfly Named Arin by Candace A. Dietz

A butterfly named Arin

That’s Arin with an “A”

Fluttered and flitted, floated and flew

Around the yard all day.

“Arin,” said her mother,

“Can’t you please sit still?”

And Arin, happy Arin, said,

“Oh, sure, of course I will!”

She tried to keep her wings still

And nap for a few minutes.

But trying to be quiet—

There just was no fun in it.

Though she was really trying,

Arin started to giggle

When one wing then the other wing

Began to twitch and wiggle!

She laughed aloud and fluttered around,

Then tried to be still again.

“Oh my, oh dear,” said Arin,

“I cannot seem to win!

I just have so much energy

That sitting still won’t work for me!”

So her wise and wonderful mother said,

“I know just what to do.

We’ll sign you up for gymnastics.

It’s perfect for someone like you!”

And Arin, happy Arin

Was even happier still:

“Will I do gymnastics?

You bet your wings I will!”

So Arin joined gymnastics class

And flopped and fluttered and flew

And high-vaulted and back-flipped

And cartwheeled loop-di-loo.

That afternoon at rest time—

It’s hard to believe but true—

Arin was still and quiet.

And she took a long nap, too

This lively, humorous book of twenty poem-stories features 19 animals and one little girl, each with some problem or in some kind of predicament. Children will love hearing about a chameleon that can’t change color (“William the Vermillion Chameleon”), a cow that can’t stop mooing (“A Cow named Sue”), a lonely bee that everyone is afraid of (“A Bee Named Bea”), and a canary that can’t sing (“A Canary Named Larry”). Each poem ends with some cheerful resolution for the character, sometimes in the form of a “lesson.” They are perfect for young children and beginning readers—rhythmic, warm-hearted and delightful to read aloud and/or act out.

Candace Dietz taught Spanish for more than 30 years to students of all ages in the Green Bay, WI area. She is the mother of four children and the grandmother of eight. Her two greatest loves are children and language. Dietz used theatrics and humor in her teaching and she recommends using  A BEE NAMED BEA in the early grades to teach drama and spelling. These little poems are sure to bring out the Drama Queen or Drama King in the reader and listener. Dietz lives in De Pere, WI, and is available to do readings for schools, libraries and other occasions.
Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David
