Christmas Gifts- Children’s Books Part 1

Ever since Suzzane was a baby there have always been two Gifts under our Christmas Tree. They were books for me to read to her when she was little and as she grew up books she could read to herself.

As well as coloring books and crayons. Most of the time we would get the coloring books and crayons the week of Thanksgiving then we could color while watching Hallmark Christmas movies.

Sharing Christmas with my sister I always got her family coloring books and crayons as well. Then Charlie came along and I always made sure he would have the same Gifts.

Now, we have Lily and Jason and I purchase coloring books for them along with my niece Payton and my grandson Elijah. I can’t wait to share Christmas Gifts- Children’s Books Part 1 with my family. I hope they find books the children in their lives would enjoy reading. Just as Charlie and I have. Check out the coloring page.

Yum Yummy Yuck by Amanda Jane Jones

Teach your kids what’s delicious and safe to eat–and what’s not–with this stylish board book.

In their hip and often humorous Instagram accounts, Amanda and Cree Jones invite the world into their life with two young kids. Now, the Joneses are sharing another experience–the struggle to keep their kids from putting everything they see into their mouths.

Using simple, bright illustrations, irresistible colors, gentle repetition, and a lighthearted tone, this stylish board book teaches babies and toddlers what they should and shouldn’t put in their mouths.

Delectable treats like an ice cream cone, a pear, and a donut are interspersed with not-so-yummy things kids find irresistible–like coins, boogers, and sand.

Facing pages display the correct use of these items– boogers go in tissues, coins in a piggy bank, and sand in a bucket. Designed to appeal to modern parents, this durable and attractive book will have kids and their parents going back to it and sharing in the fun of all the delicious and disgusting things kids like.

A Dragon on The Roof By Antonio Gaudi

A brave young girl, a whimsical house, and a ticklish dragon help young readers see the world through Gaudí’s eyes.

Set in Casa Batlló, one of Antoni Gaudí’s most renowned buildings, this joyful story introduces young readers to the architect’s work, inciting their curiosity and imagination along the way.

While her nanny is sleeping, young Paloma hears a noise. She climbs the stairs of her house until she reaches the roof, where a dragon is perched. Unafraid, Paloma reaches out to pet the dragon–but he is ticklish, and as he laughs, he spews a myriad of sea animals that he had unwittingly swallowed.

The house is transformed into a dreamy aquarium and the dragon settles into a deep sleep on the roof. Cécile Alix’s playful story and Fred Sochard’s boldly graphic illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to Gaudí’s exuberant vision.

As readers make their way through Paloma’s home, they are introduced to its fabulous elements–columns shaped like elephant legs; marine-inspired tiles, glass, and ironwork; and of course the spectacularly undulating, iridescent roof, which resembles a sleeping dragon.

The end of the book includes a brief history of Gaudí’s career and provides helpful background to Paloma’s story. Kids will want to linger over the pictures and imagine what their own house would be like if a dragon were living on their roof.

From Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw on his very first cover, to The Punisher surviving the battle of Firebase Valley Forge, there are countless instances when the military has crossed over to the pages of comic books.

Soldiers and superheroes. A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, author Jason Inman re-discovered his childhood love of comic books during long days at the Tallil Air Base in southern Iraq.

He couldn’t help but ask why so many comic books are filled with service members. Maybe it’s their loyalty to everyday citizens and the never-ending quest for justice.

The men and women who lace up their books and sacrifice their lives know that battle can change a person. What kinds of soldiers were these fictional characters, and how were they changed by war?

Perfect military enlistment gift or gift for veterans. Super Soldiers: A Salute to the Comic Book Heroes and Villains Who Fought for Their Country looks at the intersection between war and pop culture to understand these questions and more.

How the Moon Regained Her Shape is a fiction picture book for children.  Janet Ruth Heller has written a legend influenced by Native American folktales that explains why the moon changes shape and helps children deal with bullies. The sun insults the moon, and the moon feels so badly hurt that she shrinks and leaves the sky. The moon turns to her comet friend and her many friends on earth to comfort her. Her friends include rabbits and Native Americans. Then she regains her full shape, happiness, and self-esteem, and she returns to her orbit. An educational appendix gives advice about bullying, scientific information about the moon, and ideas for related activities for children.

This book has won four national awards for its lyrical writing and its wonderful artwork. Illustrator Ben Hodson won a Benjamin Franklin Award for this book’s artwork in 2007. How the Moon Regained Her Shape also won a Book Sense Pick (2006), a Children’s Choices award (2007), and a Gold Medal in the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards (2007). The book was also a finalist for the Oregon Reading Association’s 2009 Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award.

Children will learn from this book 1) that they need to tell friends and adults when bullying occurs, 2) that a bully’s insults are seldom true, 3) that children will recover from abuse, and 4) that we can be friends with people who are different from us. Bullying thrives in secrecy, and most kids feel intimidated by abuse. Adults will learn that many children need the help and advice of friends and adults to stop bullying and to recover from the loss of trust and self-esteem that such harassment causes.

Lady Lucy’s Ghost Quest is a children’s book I can’t wait to give Charlie. Charlie dogs name is Lucy. I know Charlie will enjoy a book featuring Lady Lucy and a Ghost Quest. We can even use Lady Lucy’s Ghost Quest in October when we’re studying Halloween in our classroom.

In her newest quest, Lady Lucy crosses the ocean to visit Everett Mansion in the far-away Kingdom of Vermont. Along the way, she has managed to pick up some magical friends to share her adventures. Those include a blue dragon named Dillon and Tapestry, a multicolor unicorn.

Learn to use courage; solve problems and believe in the power of the possible.

Set in Southern Vermont College at the stunning Everett Mansion during the middle ages,  Lady Lucy’s Ghost Quest follows Lady Lucy, a multi-racial Knight as she travels all the way from England to Vermont to save a beautiful but very haunted mansion. Lady Lucy brings along her friends Dillon (the dragon) and Tapestry (the Unicorn) as they start on an adventure of a lifetime. In a story filled with charm, humor and excitement, Lady Lucy demonstrates yet again the power of the possible, the capacity to find creative solutions to difficult situations and the recognition that what we fear might not be so dangerous after all. Join Lady Lucy and her friends on this amazing new Quest!

Children’s author and former president of Southern Vermont College Karen Gross is at it again with a book that not only teaches children about the things they are capable of doing but is also a tribute to the recently closed Southern Vermont College. In addition to Lady Lucy’s Ghost Quest (October 30th, 2019) being an enjoyable story for all ages, Karen hopes this book will be a lasting reminder for students and staff of this amazing college and perhaps bring people from around the globe to see the mansion.

Some might scoff at some of the ideas for the future but some scoffed at Jules Verne and Arthur Clarke, yet some of their ‘crazy ideas’ have become reality.”– Ed Massey, Retired Project Manager for Voyager & NASA Manager for Ulysses.

Kids will cozy up for hours of fun as they peruse this joyfully illustrated book that shows the endless ways winter takes hold in a busy, charming town.

Winter has arrived and everywhere you look people are embracing the season. At home there’s baking, reading, and sleeping in, while on the farm the fields are fallow and quiet. Outside people are bundled up against the cold as they are skating, sledding, and running to catch a crowded bus. The town’s buildings are alive with activity–piano lessons, a dentist appointment, shopping for presents, and visiting the museum. And if you look closer, you’ll recognize the same characters on page after page, each with their own story. Wilfred the jogger has lost his keys, and Erica is shopping for a Christmas tree. Each minutely detailed scene is bursting with different people, such as a cheerful lady with an umbrella and a young violinist, as well as animals and birds. In the tradition of Richard Scarry and Where’s Waldo, this book encourages kids to return again and again to these charming spreads, following along with the characters and inventing their own stories. They’ll recognize parts of their own world, while also learning about the endless ways we live, work, and play in the winter.
