Food Holidays: September 2nd, 2022

Welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: September 2nd, 2022. Today were celebrating Grits and Bacon. If David knew this he would be wanting to go Grocery Shopping to pick up both for dinner since he was working during breakfast. Which I can always eat Bacon but I will pass on Grits. How about you?

National “Grits for Breakfast” Day

  1. Grits which sometimes are called Sofkee or Sofkey from the Muskogee word are a food of Native American origin common in the Southern United States. Grits are mainly eaten at breakfast.
  2. Grits consist of coarsely ground Corn, or sometimes Alkali-treated Corn ie Hominy.
  3. Grits are similar to other thick maize-based Porridges from around the World, including Polenta, or the thinner Farina.
  4. Grits are usually prepared by adding one part Grits to two-to-three parts boiling Water, Seasoned with Salt or Sugar and Butter.
  5. Grits are usually cooked for 5–10 minutes for “quick” Grits or 20 or more minutes for Whole Kernel Grits, or until the Water is absorbed and the Grits become a Porridge-like consistency.

International Bacon Day

International Bacon Day or Bacon Day is an unofficial Holiday, often celebrated on the Saturday before US Labor Day or the first Monday of September. Some cultures, however, celebrate International Bacon Day on February 19th, while others celebrate the day on the first Saturday in January after the new year.

Bacon day celebrations typically include Social gatherings which participants create dishes containing Bacon. Including Bacon for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Bacon Day gatherings may also include the consumption of Soy Bacon or Turkey Bacon.

Did you know Bacon Day was conceived in 2004 by a group of CU Boulder (Colorado) graduate students. Bacon Day in Manchester UK is celebrated by several students on the 14thof January, prior to January examinations as a distraction from revision. Bucknell students are also known for their Bacon day celebrations, calling themselves “Meatheads”, and gorging on as much Bacon as possible.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
