Homeschool Field Trips in or around DFW: Meridian State Park

When Suzzane was alieve and I was with her step-dad Everett. Katherine Everett’s mom lived in Meridian. We would visit at least once a month if possible. Even though we were Homeschooling Suzzane we never stopped to research Meridian to see what attractions there were.

Which is why I’m excited to bring you Homeschool Field Trips in or around DFW: Meridian State Park. I would like to take a Day Trip and take Charlie down to look around. Then if we had time on the way home we could stop at Glenrose and visit the Dinosaur Park. Or if we had time and Davicd was able to get off we could spend the weekend and visit several Cities while there. Would you like to join us on our adventure.

Meridian State Park

Nestled among Limestone bluffs at the top of the Hill Country which is someplace I’ve never visited but would like to. You’ll find a tranquil place to unwind with your family. 50 miles northwest of Waco.

Things to Do

This is a small park, set on 72-acre Lake Meridian. We can cool off with a swim, fish, or go out in a paddle boat. Bring your snacks or have a Picnic on the Land. If your trying to get in walking then you should explore the trails, you will see Wildlife.

Charlie has been asking to go Camping which we’ve never done and here we can camp overnight, so we have enough time to admire the historic structures that the Civilian Conservation Corps built over 80 years ago.

Hiking

Explore five miles of trails on foot. The 2.2-mile Bosque Hiking Trail circles Lake Meridian, taking you past Limestone outcroppings and scenic overlooks. If you are quiet, you might catch a glimpse of Wildlife, too. A portion of the Shinnery Ridge Trail is accessible for wheelchairs.

Fishing

David enjoyes Fishing and has been wanting to take Charlie so they can try there luck Fishing in the no-wake Lake. Which provides shoreline access and an ADA-accessible Fishing pier. If you don’t have your own fishing gear its okay because they will loan you Fishing geear for use in the Park. Here you do not need a license to Fish from Shore, Pier or Boat which David will like.

Paddling

A vending machine at the lakeside offers single Kayak rentals.

Camping

Choose from primitive up to full hookup campsites. Gather your Homeschool group for group camps.

For people like me who don’t like Bugs and sleeping outside they offer screened shelters and three cabins.

Birding

Bird watching is a great activity for Homeschoolers and here we can listen for endangered golden-cheeked Warblers, who nest here from March to July.

Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1827(V), made up of World War I Veterans, constructed this Park in 1933 and 1934. They built the Dam for the Lake, as well as the cut-stone refectory and open-air pavilion.

Learn more about their work at The Look of Nature: Meridian.

Activities: Camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking, lake swimming (unsupervised), boating, bird watching, fishing, and bicycling on park roads.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
