Homeschool Resources: May, 2021

Well its May and usually in our Hometown public schools would be winding up for the year. In Homeschool you can go year round if you like. Which is what Charlie will be doing this year.

Next year if Covid-19 is under control we plan on putting Charlie back into school because he will be in 8th grade. I am not sure I could teach the classed he needs and would end up messing his Education up.

We all know April showers bring May flowers! We’ve been working on our Garden the past couple weeks. But took this week off from everything as Charlie and I were sick.

Making me late getting Charlie’s Lesson Plans and Unit Studies done. As I sat down this evening I thought I would share what we will be studying this month because you might want to check out the resources as well.

Homeschool Resources: May, 2021

May 4 – World Asthma Day

Which is also my sisters Birthday. Charlie and my father in law have Asthma making this a great Holiday to share with them. Although, Asthma isn’t anything to celebrate.

Check out this Unit Study on Asthma in the Lungs Unit which you will find a chapter called Lungs in Trouble. Along with other Lesson Plans for your family to study.

May 10 – The Transcontinental Railroad Completed (1869)

Charlie and David love Trains and while studying this Lesson we can visit Grapevine, Texas to ride the Train and visit the Train Museum they have.

For Art Class I can ask David to take Charlie out to his Uncle Don who owns Don Lambert – Digital Artistry and show him the trains he has painted. As well as listen to the stories Don can tell Charlie.

The Trains Unit explores Railroads of old to their places in modern Cities.

May 18 – Mount St. Helens Eruption (1980)

This is one of the one of the most famous Volcanoes in the United States. I wish I could take Charlie to see a Volcano up close. But at the moment I can’t but we can study Volcanoes in these lessons:

Volcanoes Unit giving students a look at a volcano, how they’re formed, and how we’ve learned to live with Volcanoes

May 22 – Pioneers Begin to Head West (1843)

On this day in 1843, the first major wagon train departed for the west coast on the Oregon Trail. Thousands of more pioneers followed in the upcoming decades.

You can learn more about this in the Lesson Plan on Westward Expansion or inside the Pioneers Units which teaches about the Europeans who moved westward. Then if you or your Students want to learn about the Native American tribes they may have encountered read about the Plains Indians.

May 26 – Sally Ride’s Birthday

Could you imagine being in Space. I don’t think either Charlie or David could go because there scared of heights. If the truth were told at this time of my life I don’t think I could either as I am having more and more Panic Attacks when I am somewhere new.

Happy Birthday to Sally Ride! In 1983, she became the first American woman in Space. If you would like to have your students study Space then you will want to check out this Space Unit.

Inside are Lessons on The Solar System, and the The International Space Station.

May 29 – Hillary and Norgay Reach the Top of Mt. Everest (1953)

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay have the distinction of being the first-ever to climb to the Top on May 2nd, 1953. If you have questions about this feat then you should check out this Mountains Unit.

Inside these lessons you will explore the greatest peaks around the world.

May 31 – Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who fought and died for the United States in the Armed forces. This includes mine and David’s dad. Did your parents serve?

Services around the country will be held for the men and women who have helped keep America safe. While discussing this holiday with your family, begin with The Monuments of Our Capital Topic from a Lesson Plan about Washington, D.C.

To continue your students lessons they can explore Units on the Civil War, World War I, or World War II.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
