Lesson Plan/ Unit Study Muhammad Ali

Good morning, welcome to our Lesson Plan/ Unit Study on Muhammad Ali. I would like to share how we get one of the resources we use in our Homeschool Reading Class.

Ali: A Life in Pictures tells the story of perhaps the most influential athlete of the 20th century, both in the joyous way he celebrated his achievements and in his willingness to stand up for matters of conviction.

This special issue follows Ali’s journey from his Louisville youth to the pinnacle of the boxing world. Ali delighted fans with his ability to fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee, and star in some of the greatest spectacles in the History of the sweet Science.

But when asked to serve in a war he considered unjust, he sacrificed his heavyweight title in the name of his beliefs, drawing both scorn in his time and respect for all time. Documenting his ring skills, his celebrity, and his status as a cultural icon, the words and pictures in this special issue show why Ali was “the Greatest.”

Charlie and I use Magazines and one of the ones we use is Life which I am able to pick up at the grocery story. The magazines might seem a little pricey because they cost more than books but they can be used in so many ways including decorating our Entertainment wall and Charlie’s bedroom.

With the magazines begin on the first page and read a section a night sometimes that might be 5 minutes and other times it could be 30 minutes. Then we discuss what we read.

Charlie lets me know words he didn’t know and we add them to our Spelling Test. We look up movies and books based on what the individual does to enhance our studies.

I have Charlie research and see if he can find what that person liked to eat which we prepare in our Homeschool Cooking Class and we also try and find a song that individual liked which we use in our Music Class.

I look online for more lesson plans to build on what we have used from the magazine and one of the websites I like to use is Teachers Pay Teachers and if you were studying Muhammad Ali then you would search on the website and here is what I found.

I was on Amazon and I found two books Charlie and I will be reading. They are Muhammad Ali (Little People, BIG DREAMS) and Becoming Muhammad Ali.

Becoming Muhammad Ali by [James Patterson, Kwame Alexander, Dawud Anyabwile]
From two heavy-hitters in children’s literature comes a critically acclaimed biographical novel of cultural icon Muhammad Ali. *”This utterly delightful story about Ali’s childhood is a smash hit.” –School Library Journal (starred review)  Longlisted for the 2022-2023 Indiana Young Hoosier Book Award, and nominated for the 2021-2022 Black Eyed Susan Book Award!

Before he was a household name, Cassius Clay was a kid with struggles like any other. Kwame Alexander and James Patterson join forces to vividly depict his life up to age seventeen in both prose and verse, including his childhood friends, struggles in school, the racism he faced, and his discovery of boxing.

Readers will learn about Cassius’ family and neighbors in Louisville, Kentucky, and how, after a thief stole his bike, Cassius began training as an amateur boxer at age twelve. Before long, he won his first Golden Gloves bout and began his transformation into the unrivaled Muhammad Ali.

Fully authorized by and written in cooperation with the Muhammad Ali estate, and vividly brought to life by Dawud Anyabwile’s dynamic artwork, Becoming Muhammad Ali captures the budding charisma and youthful personality of one of the greatest sports heroes of all time

Did you know there was songs written about Muhammad Ali which you can see here. Did you know Muhammad Ali’s favorite meal is Baked Chicken, Mac and Cheese, Spinach and Green Peas which Charlie and I will be creating in our Cooking Class.

For Movie Night Charlie and I will be watching One Night In Miami which I have seen and enjoyed along with Ali with Will Smith because Charlie and I love his acting and we can’ t wait to see how he portrays The Champ.
