I’m telling you Thursday felt like one of those days that never really slowed down from the moment it started. You know the kind where you look up at the clock and realize hours have passed, but it feels like you just finished the last task. That was our Thursday.

We started out early with a long list of things that needed to get done. Between errands, household supplies, and getting Charlie ready for his work schedule this week, it felt like we were already behind before the day even fully began. David was off work today, which should have meant a slower pace, but instead it turned into one of those “let’s just get everything done at once” kind of days.

At some point, I’ve learned that those days are just part of family life. You can plan for calm, but life often chooses busy instead. One of the first stops of the day involved picking up supplies at Walmart. Between cleaning items for the house and things we needed to stay organized with an extra dog in the home, the cart filled up faster than expected. Costing more than I expected to spend as Charlie was out of a lot of bath & boys items he needed.

Having a house guest like Gunnar staying with us for about a week and a half has been a blessing, but it also means adjusting routines just a bit. Every pet has their own personality, and when you add a new one into the mix, you find yourself paying attention to little details you might normally overlook.

Gunnar has been settling in well, but we still wanted to make sure the house was safe, clean, and comfortable for everyone involved. That included a little extra tidying, moving things around, and making sure everyone had their own space to relax.

David also managed to squeeze in a haircut today, which honestly felt like one of those small wins in the middle of a busy schedule. It is funny how something so simple can make you feel like you have accomplished something meaningful when the rest of the day is filled with errands and to-do lists.

Charlie’s schedule added another layer to the day. Charlie headed into work at 2 PM and will be working until 10 PM tonight. That meant our evening would end with picking him up after his shift, which has now become part of our regular routine.

Watching Charlie and Bradley work hard and build responsibility has been one of those bittersweet parenting milestones. You are proud of the independence, but you still feel that pull of wanting to make sure they are okay and gets home safely.

Before Charlie left, there was the usual rush to make sure he had everything he needed for work, which always seems to involve last-minute questions, finding missing items, and double-checking schedules. That is just part of life with a busy household.

Earlier in the day, we also found ourselves talking through dinner plans, which turned into a little bit of a surprise success story. We had originally planned something simple, but a great deal at HEB changed things up. We picked up a large pack of chicken for under five dollars, which felt like one of those rare grocery wins you do not want to pass up. Instead of pre-cut pieces, we decided to dice it ourselves, which stretched the value even further.

Charlie also decided to switch things up at dinner by choosing rigatoni instead of the usual fettuccine noodles. It was a small change, but it ended up making tonight’s chicken Alfredo feel a little different in a good way. We used Prego Alfredo sauce, which kept the meal simple and comforting after such a busy day.

By the time evening rolled around, the house finally started to slow down. David had already knocked out his haircut and errands. I had finished most of the household tasks. The dogs were settling in for the night, including Gunnar, who is still adjusting but doing well. There is something about the evening hours that always feels like a reset button, even on the busiest days.

David is going to cat nap a little bit before David and Bradely prepare to head out later to pick Charlie up from work. It will be a late night finish to a very full day, but that is just life sometimes. Not every day is calm or perfectly organized. Some days are messy, loud, busy, and a little exhausting. But those days are also real, and in their own way, they matter just as much as the quiet days.

As I sit here thinking back on everything we managed to get done today, I realize how quickly time moves when you are in the middle of living it. Morning turns into afternoon, afternoon into evening, and before you know it, the day is almost over.

What I’m learning more and more is that it is not about having perfect days. It is about appreciating the ones you are in, even when they are chaotic. It is about finding small moments of connection in between everything else.

A quick conversation in the car. A shared meal around the table. A laugh in the middle of stress. A quiet moment before bed. Those are the things that stay with you. They are also the ones that create the best memories to carry us through the hard days.

So while today may have been busy, it was also filled with the kind of ordinary moments that slowly turn into memories. And at the end of the day, that is what family life really is. Now it is time to wrap up Thursday and get ready for whatever tomorrow brings.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
