Our Meal at Our Meal at Schlotzsky’s Deli: What We Ordered, What We Loved, and What We’d Skip Next Time

The Mommies Reviews

As much as I hate to admit it its defiantly hot here in Texas. Figuring out what to eat has been so hard because cooking makes the house hot. The other day we decided to pick dinner up for Gerald, David and I. Charlie was working and he decided he would get something when he got off from work.

Gerald decided he wanted Blue Mound Cafe which would take us to Rufe Snow which should be called Restaurant Row. When we got there I kept looking around trying to decide what I wanted. David said he was going to get a Pizza at Bosses Pizza.

I finally let David know I wanted Schlotzsky’s Deli which is a place I save for Winter because they have my Potato Cheese Soup and I can pick a half of a Sandwich even though Jason’s Deli is at the end of the Street and they have Potato Soups and Sandwiches but I like Schlotzsky’s Bread which is Sourdough Bread.

The funny part is as soon as I mentioned Schlotzsky’s Deli David decided he would have it as well because he loves there Sandwiches more than anyone else. Plus, this is the one place we hadn’t had the opportunity to eat at in a while which was nice.

I choose them because some nights we just need something simple. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, just a place where we could sit down together, talk about the day, and share a meal without overthinking it. That’s how we ended up at Schlotzsky’s Deli.

It wasn’t planned as anything big. It was one of those easy stops where you walk in hungry, ready for something warm and familiar, and just let the evening unfold from there. I decided to try their Mix & Match option, which lets you build your meal from half sandwiches, half salads, soups, flatbreads, mac and cheese, and more.

I went straight for comfort food. I ordered the potato soup with no chives, and a Turkey Bacon Club. I made a few changes because I’ve learned over time that ordering it my way makes all the difference. I added ham to the sandwich for a little extra flavor and protein, but I asked them to keep it simple with just cheddar cheese instead of the three-cheese blend.

I also wanted a little lettuce for crunch, no tomato, and I switched their light mayo to regular mayo because that’s just what I prefer. I skipped the signature sauce completely so the sandwich wouldn’t feel too heavy or overpowering, and it all came on their sourdough bun.

David went a different direction with his meal. He ordered the Deluxe Original, in a large which is their upgraded version of The Original sandwich. His came loaded with ham, salami, and extra meat, along with three cheeses, olives, lettuce, mustard, and their signature sauce on sourdough. He skipped the onions and tomatoes, keeping it closer to how he likes his sandwiches but still keeping those bold deli flavors.

What I liked most about my meal was how comforting it felt. The potato soup was warm and creamy in that simple, no-fuss way that makes you slow down while you eat. My sandwich had just enough customization that it tasted like something made for me instead of something straight off a menu board.

David’s sandwich was definitely the heavier, more loaded option. He liked the extra meat and the stronger flavor from the olives and mustard, and it felt like a true deli-style sandwich with a lot going on in every bite. Usually David has half the Sandwich left over for lunch but not this time and I have no, clue where he put all that food.

One thing we both noticed was how filling everything was. Even with me ordering a half sandwich and soup, it was more than enough food. The nice part was even though I only got a half-sandwich it was enough for me for dinner that I was able to bring my Soup home for lunch. I lust had to make sure Charlie and Gerald didn’t snag it before I could eat it and they didn’t. Thank the LORD. Our meal had that classic deli comfort feel where you don’t leave hungry.

They also had Cinnabon available, which caught my attention right away. Usually, I would grab the mini cinnamon rolls for Charlie and me to take home, but this time I passed on it. Sometimes you just don’t need the extra sweet treat, even when it’s sitting right there calling your name. Plus, we all know there not on my diet.

One thing I noticed while we were there is that Schlotzsky’s also has a rewards program that’s worth paying attention to. The when we received our receipt we received another coupon to use, and I learned that if you sign up for their app, you earn points on every purchase.

The system is simple — for every dollar spent, you earn two points. Those points can be redeemed toward future purchases, and they also offer reward exclusives and even a birthday reward, which makes it feel more personal if you visit often.

They also have gift cards available, which is nice if you’re looking for an easy gift idea for someone who enjoys casual dining or quick deli meals. Overall, it was a simple meal, but a good one. Nothing overly complicated, just familiar food done in a way that works for a casual night out. It fit the moment perfectly, and sometimes that’s really all you need.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
