Room to Room, Grace by Grace Hallway Review: Little Debbie Swiss Rolls

The Mommies Reviews

Today’s hallway review comes straight from my snack stand which is inside our Coffee Nok area I created for Charlie and I. Sometimes you will find snacks for David on the shelves as well. Today we’re talking about one of my longtime favorites— Little Debbie Swiss Rolls.

You know, I always thought they were called Swiss Cake Rolls, but the box actually just says Swiss Rolls. Funny how we remember things differently after all these years. This is one snack David doesn’t mind sharing with me once in a while because you have to remember he isn’t like me and a big fan of sweets or Chocolates. I think its because he doesn’t know what’s good.

This box comes with 12 cake rolls that are twin wrapped, with six servings per box. As someone who’s trying to lose weight, I do have one suggestion for Little Debbie: I really wish these were individually wrapped instead of packaged in pairs. When there are two in the package, it almost feels like permission to eat both of them. Today, that’s exactly what happened. David wasn’t here to share one with me, and Charlie isn’t much of a fan, so I ended up eating both. I know I didn’t need to—but I did.

One thing that really caught my attention was the packaging. The box shows the Little Debbie design from 1965 alongside today’s version. I have to admit, I actually like the vintage little girl with her hat better than the modern design. There’s just something nostalgic about it. And seeing that old 49-cent price made me smile. I remember when I could buy these for around $1.25. Today, I paid $3.19 at Walmart, and that really shows how much prices have changed over the years.

Each serving—which is two cakes—contains 280 calories, 12 grams of fat, 7 grams of saturated fat, no trans fat, about 3% cholesterol, 6% sodium, 15% of your daily carbohydrates, and only 1 gram of protein. Since I’m working on eating healthier, the low protein means these aren’t exactly a diet-friendly snack, but sometimes you just want a little treat. I couldn’t make out the sugar content because the print was too small for me to read.

The Swiss Rolls are made by McKee Foods in Collegedale, Tennessee, and I appreciated seeing the reminder on the box to recycle the carton. Which I need to work on my family to do more and to talk our Apartment Complex into setting up recycling bins on the deck for people to use.

Now let’s talk about the taste.- The outside is covered in a rich chocolate coating that I’ve always enjoyed. Inside is a creamy filling wrapped in soft chocolate cake. The cream reminds me a little of the filling in an Oreo cookie, although it’s definitely not the same flavor. If I could change one thing besides the packaging, I’d ask for just a little more cream filling.

Even with those small wishes, these remain one of my favorite late-night comfort snacks or early go-to snacks when I’m trying to get work done before everyone needs something. I love how they’ve been around for decades, because sometimes it’s nice to enjoy something familiar that brings back good memories.

My Hallway Rating

I’d give Little Debbie Swiss Rolls 4½ out of 5 stars.

The flavor is still delicious, the chocolate coating is satisfying, and the nostalgia is hard to beat. I only took away half a star because I’d love to see them individually wrapped and with a little extra cream filling. Sometimes the sweetest memories come in a simple chocolate roll with a glass of Milk.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
