Bartender Appreciation Day – in Europe– always held on February 24th

Cheers to the bartenders of the world today, today is World Bartender Day. Today is a holiday to celebrate the bar tending craft. To give recognition and appreciation to the men and women behind the counters at bars, pubs, breweries or wineries we frequent.

Did you know tending bar is among the world’s oldest professions, and a very important profession at that. You trust your local barkeep to fix your drink to your liking, and in a timely manner. In addition to perfectly preparing and serving drinks, a bartender is often a part-time psychologist of sorts. Bartenders are excellent listeners. Many a patron has unloaded their problems or sought advice, while cozied up to the bar. Patrons have confessed up things they wouldn’t tell their spouse, closet friend, doctor, and even perhaps their Church Priest.

There are all types of bartenders and they can be a professional or non-professional. Tending bar is a skill position. The real professionals attend Bartender’s school for a formal education. Bartenders know by heart, how to mix hundreds of drinks. You yourself may have been a casual type of bartender without even knowing it. If you’ve ever mixed and served drinks behind a counter at a Church or club function, at parties, or even in your own home, you’ve been a bartender.

The most memorable bartenders were Sam (Ted Danson) and the lovable “Coach” (Nicholas Colasanto) on the television sitcom “Cheers”. Did you watch this sitcom because if you want to know I did and still do at times. I’ve even gotten Charlie to watch Cheers with me.

How to Celebrate bar Tender Apperception Day:

  • Visit your local bar, pub, brewery or Winery.
  • Give your bartender a warm smile and a hearty thank you.
  • Leave your bartender a generous tip.

St. Nicholas Day-always observed on December 6th

St. Nicholas Day is today. Did you know there really was a Christian Saint Nicholas? Christian Saint Nicholas lived in the Country of Greece, just a couple hundred years after the birth of Christ. Christian Saint Nicholas is in honor of Saint Nicholas and his life. Saint Nicholas became a Priest, and later, a Bishop of the early Catholic Church. True to the Christian concept of giving up belongings and following Christ, St. Nicholas gave up all of his belongings. Christian Saint Nicholas was well known for giving to needy people, especially children. There are many stories and tales of Christian Saint Nicholas helping out children in need.

The practice of hanging up stockings originated with Saint Nicholas. As the ancient legend goes, Saint Nicholas was known to throw small bags of gold coins into the open windows of poor homes. After one bag of gold fell into the stocking of a child, news got around. Children soon began hanging their stockings by their chimneys “in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there”.

It wasn’t until the 1800’s that the spirit of St. Nicholas’ life evolved into the creation of Santa Claus which happened in America. Santa Claus emerged from the stories and legends of St. Nicholas. Santa Claus was kind and generous to children. Unlike “St. Nick”, Santa Claus is largely a non-religious character. Although Sant Nicholas does have roots in Christianity.
