International Red Panda Bear Day – Third Saturday in September

The Giant Panda, that is cute and adorable and is a Black and White Bear gets its share of attention but today we are happy that its cousin, the

receives its own special day of recognition and appreciation….

The Red Panda known as the “Firefox” and “Lesser Panda”, Red Pandas are native to China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Tibet. The Red Panda’s diet is primarily Bamboo, but they also eat Fruits, Grasses, Eggs, Mushrooms, Nuts, Insects and Grubs.

The Red Panda are commonly referred to as “cousins” to the Giant Panda Bear. The Red Panda are not related at all. As a matter of fact, they are in a class all by themselves. They are the only members of the “Ailuridae” family. Like the Giant Panda Bear, the Red Panda is on the Endangered Species List. Poaching for their hide and loss of Habitat are the major threats to the The Red Panda.

There are over 300 species of Bamboos, the favorite food of The Red Panda Bears. More on Bamboo

The Red Panda Network is the major international promoter of The Red Panda and this Holiday. Their goals are to expose illegal poaching of The Red Panda , identifying the supply chain to the black market for their hides. They also seek to educate the public to this illegal trade and the threats to their habitat.

The Red Panda Network also offers the title “Red Panda Ranger” to kids who spread the word about The Red Panda and their plight.

In addition to helping save the The Red Panda, we encourage you to visit one of over 60 Zoos world wide, that have a resident Red Panda .

National Cheeseburger Day

National Cheeseburger Day is today let’s top off America’s favorite Sandwich, with a piece of Cheese.

The Food Industry makes it a point to celebrate a wide variety of foods and we believe the Cheeseburger certainly earns a special day.

Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day by firing up the Grill, and cooking Cheeseburgers. You can create a Cheeseburger for lunch or dinner…. or both! Any kind of cheese will do. Try a different Cheese, if your in the mood for a different taste. For the Carb Conscious, eat your Burgers without the Buns.

Watch for Lunch and Dinner specials today at your local Restaurants. Tops on the specials board certainly should be Cheeseburgers!

History and Origin of National Cheeseburger Day:

This Holiday was established in 2012 but we found no other factual information about this Holiday. There was some reference to the American Dairy Association sponsoring this day. We have yet to find substantial evidence to confirm this.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

Oktoberfest  begins in Germany – date varies

  • Oktoberfest 2021: September 18  – October 3
  • Oktoberfest 2022: September 17  – October 3
  • Oktoberfest 2023: September 16 – October 3

Oktoberfest is a two week German Beer Festival, held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. While Oktoberfest is a giant world festival in Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations are held around the world during this time. If you can’t get to the festival in Germany, you can participate in a local event.

It’s time to eat, drink, and be merry! Each year, the Oktoberfest is opened, as the Mayor of Munich taps a keg a of Beer. There is even a special Brew made, aptly called Oktoberfest beer.

Oktoberfest is not just a celebration of Beer and it is a huge Festival with lots of Food, Music, Dancing, Rides, and Carnival Booths. Each year millions of people from all over the world come to the Fair. Oktoberfest Celebrations and Festivals are held around the world during this time. These festivals also celebrate the rich heritage of the German people.

The very first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810 and it was held to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (King Ludwig 1) to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Wedding took place on October 12th, and a great Horse Race (in celebration of the marriage) was held a few days later on October 17th. The marriage was celebrated annually, and came to be known as Oktoberfest.

Early Oktoberfest celebrations were held in October and the Festival was eventually moved to September, as the weather was better earlier in the Fall.

Oktoberfest has been held annually since 1810 and throughout this time, it has been canceled a few times, due to wars, and once due to a major Cholera outbreak (1854) in the region.

Over the years, the festival grew. Carnival booths appeared. Beer became a central theme, and flowed freely. Food was a big part of the festivities. And, later rides were added. Millions of people annually flock to Oktoberfest in Munich.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
