Bear Bear Enjoying Summer on the Back Porch

Dogs/ Puppies

I thought I would share a little bit about Bear Charlie’s dog. Bear or Brar Bear as she is called at times is a Chiweenie, which means she’s a mix between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund. She’s Lucy’s baby, our dog that passed away. Bear was born when we were still living in our Mobile Home. Out of all the dogs Charlie has loved over the years, Bear is the one he’s had from day one. She’s his best friend and emotional support dog, and they have always shared a special bond.

If Charlie leaves she tries and escapes to go and find Charlie or she will sit and whine at the door. If that doesn’t work she goes and camps out in Charlie’s bed until he gets home. Or until David does then she sits with David and watches tv.

Now, Bear has one talent that keeps us all on our toes. She is a little Houdini. If a door is cracked open, she can disappear in the blink of an eye. Over the years she’s given us more than a few scares. Thankfully, with patience and lots of work, she’s learned that she doesn’t have to run away to enjoy the outdoors.

These days, she’ll happily lie beside me on the front porch, stretched out on a cushion and soaking up the sunshine. Sometimes she’ll sneak out the front door and simply lie on the porch by herself because she loves being outside so much. She’s our little sunbather.

We also leave the upstairs balcony door open quite a bit, and Bear will go outside and lounge on the couch. It always makes Charlie nervous because he’s afraid she might jump off the balcony, but she never does. More often than not, I’ll walk downstairs and see the back patio door open. I already know why—Charlie leaves it open so Bear can come and go onto the patio whenever she wants because he knows how much she enjoys being outside.

I just wish we had a fenced yard like the Mobile Home did where all the dogs could run and play. Appian Way Apartments/ Townhomes does have a dog park, but we’ve heard about several dogs getting sick there, and public dog parks honestly make me nervous. Instead, we take lots and lots of walks together, and that works just fine for us.

Phoebe is completely different from Bear Bear. Since she’s black and white, she doesn’t enjoy the sun nearly as much. While Bear Bear is outside soaking up every ray she can find, Phoebe is usually upstairs, curled up comfortably on the bed. Two completely different personalities, but we love them both just the same. Phoebe is my girl, and Bear Bear is Charlie’s.

And soon, our little family is going to grow again. Charlie is bringing home another puppy from Bradley’s house. I believe her name is going to be Sheenamaya, although I’m still not exactly sure what kind of dog she is. Whatever she turns out to be, she’ll be welcomed with plenty of love.

Crazy dogs, different personalities, and lots of wagging tails—that’s life around our house, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way. All that is missing is our Annie who is living her best life at Uncle Don’s and Aunt Barbara in Springtown so she has a yard because our Apartment complex said she was to big to be here.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
