Some of the greatest acts of kindness aren’t expensive or complicated. Sometimes they begin with a bottle of cold water, a bag of chips, and a heartfelt thank you. Which is why I’ve been toying with the idea of putting a blessing basket on the porch for people stopping by my home.
Because here is Texas in the Summer it can reach 100 degrees and I was thinking about all the people who quietly take care of our family each day, I realized how often we take them for granted. The mail carriers, UPS drivers, FedEx drivers, Amazon drivers, and other delivery workers keep our lives moving. They show up in the Texas heat, through rainstorms, and during the busy holiday season with smiles on their faces and packages in their hands.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about my father-in-law. His medications and medical supplies are often delivered right to his home. Those deliveries aren’t just boxes on the porch—they’re important parts of his care. It reminded me that behind every package is a person who chose to spend their day serving others. That made me wonder what would happen if more of us paused long enough to simply say, “Thank you.”
You don’t have to spend a fortune. In fact, you can visit Dollar Tree with about twenty dollars and put together a thoughtful basket with bottled water, sports drinks, crackers, granola bars, cookies, peanuts, or other individually wrapped snacks. Add a handwritten note, a Bible verse, and a simple prayer for safety, and you’ve created something that can brighten someone’s entire day.
Our family chose Psalm 121:8 for our sign:
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
This Bible verse is a beautiful reminder that every mile matters and that God watches over those who spend their days on the road. What I love most about this idea is that it doesn’t have to stop with delivery drivers. If you have elderly parents or grandparents who receive regular deliveries, consider making them a thank-you basket to keep by their front door.
It can be a wonderful way for them to show appreciation to the people who faithfully deliver medications, medical supplies, groceries, or other necessities. The same idea works for an elderly neighbor who may not be able to get out often. A simple basket filled with drinks and snacks could last several weeks and become a small blessing to everyone who stops by to help.
Kindness has a way of spreading. One bottle of water may encourage someone who has been working in the summer heat for hours. One handwritten note may remind someone that their work matters. One prayer may be exactly what someone needs before getting back behind the wheel.
In a world that often moves too fast, we all have opportunities to slow down and let someone know they’re appreciated. Today, I encourage you to look around your own neighborhood and ask yourself, “Who quietly serves my family each week?”
Maybe it’s your mail carrier. Maybe it’s the delivery driver bringing medicine to your parents. Maybe it’s the person dropping off groceries for an elderly neighbor. Whoever it is, take a few moments to let them know they’re seen. A little basket may seem small to us, but to someone who’s been driving all day, it can be a refreshing reminder that kindness still exists.
Thank you to every mail carrier, delivery driver, and service worker who faithfully cares for our communities. We appreciate you, we’re praying for your safety, and we hope you know that your work truly makes a difference. When school returns don’t forget our bus drivers.
