Grocery shopping can almost break the bank for my family and that is why some of the best summer memories do not come from expensive vacations or big plans. Sometimes they come from the little surprises we find while we are out grocery shopping for Charlie and his friends. Because we all know teens can eat and drink us out of our houses.

If your family is like mine and you are a one-income family, you learn to look for those little treasures that stretch your budget but still bring joy. Finding something fun and unexpected can turn an ordinary day into a special memory for your kids, grandkids, or family members.

That is exactly what happened when I found Skittles drink mixes at Walmart. I was walking through the store and discovered they were marked down to only a dollar. My first thought was about Charlie and Bradley because I knew they would enjoy having something fun to add to their water. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized these little drink packets could become so much more than just a drink.

They could become part of a summer memory. The Skittles drink mixes came in tropical flavors like Strawberry Starfruit I thought David might like, Mango Tangelo I thought Charlie might like, Kiwi Lime for Bradley, and Pineapple Passion Fruit Charlie and David might like. The bright colors and fun flavors immediately made me think of summer days, backyard gatherings, and kids looking for something exciting to enjoy.

One of my favorite ideas for these drink mixes would be creating a summer movie night basket. Imagine surprising the kids with a basket filled with Skittles drink mixes, Skittles candy, popcorn, and their favorite movie snacks. Add a cozy blanket and pick a movie everyone can enjoy, and you have a simple family night that feels special.

It does not have to cost a lot of money to create a memory. Sometimes the excitement comes from the surprise itself — knowing someone thought about you and put together something just for fun. These drink mixes would also be perfect for a summer fiesta around the pool.

The bright flavors and colorful packaging make them a fun addition to a summer celebration. Whether you are having family over, celebrating a birthday, or just enjoying an evening outside, little touches like fun drinks can make a gathering feel festive while allowing families to spend time together.

You can create a simple basket with:

  • Fun drink mixes like these Skittles drink packets
  • Candy treats
  • Snacks
  • Summer decorations from Dollar Tree
  • A few inexpensive extras

It is a great reminder that entertaining does not have to mean spending a fortune.

Even though these are perfect for summer, they can also transition into back-to-school gift ideas. Or Stocking Stuffer Gifts during Christmas and a fun handout during Halloween.

A small basket of favorite snacks and drink mixes can make a fun surprise for:

  • Kids starting a new school year
  • College students heading back to campus
  • Teachers needing a little pick-me-up
  • Family members who need encouragement

Sometimes those little surprises are what people remember the most.

One thing I have learned is that gifts do not always have to be expensive to be meaningful and Summer Gifts can be creating memories around food and snacks.

A small find from a store can become:

  • A family movie night
  • A backyard party idea
  • A road trip treat
  • A care package
  • A reminder that someone was thinking of you

That is why I love finding budget-friendly items because they allow us to be creative while still staying within our means. Whether you are putting together a summer fiesta basket, planning a movie night, or just surprising the kids with something fun after a long week, these little finds can bring a lot of smiles. Because sometimes the best summer memories come from the smallest surprises.

What is one inexpensive find that has turned into a special family memory for you?

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
