The Kitchen Project – Food History

It’s Thursday, and time for a Homeschool Resource: Social Sciences. I would like to ask you to check out the Recommended Website: The Kitchen Project – Food History. If you have used this resource in the past what did you think of it and why?

Age Range: 10-18 (Grades 5-12, with parental supervision) With today’s ad-supported website visitors can uncover the history of some of their favorite foods. Created by Chefs Stephen Block and Stephen Holloway, this website explores the origins of certain foods, how they got their names, and other interesting facts about them.

Some delightful dishes to choose from are:

  • carrot cake
  • hoagie
  • French toast
  • Reuben
  • cake
  • dumplings
  • buffalo wings
  • the hamburger
  • pizza
  • And so much more.

There is even a free food history course (if you sign up using your email address)! This site is easy to navigate, loaded with interesting information, and yummy recipes. The history of food makes an interesting topic to explore and a great addition to a home economics course.
