The Small Things That Save the Day

Ultimate Blog Challenge

It’s been a weekend and a half this weekend. David was off for Larry’s funeral on Saturday. Charlie was in and out last night and two boys ended up spending the night.

It’s Sunday afternoon and instead of moving forward I seem to be sinking. I am supposed to be at Girlsa Day at Lisa’s at 5. I just don’t think I’m going to make it as life is leading me in different directions plus I’m not sure I fit into that group of ladies.

Instead, I’m going to stay home to keep working so hopefully I will be prepared for next week when Charlie leaves. That is why I wanted to share The Small Things That Save the Day which is part of The Ultimate Blog Challenge in our home and hopefully yours as well.

Remember some days aren’t defined by big moments. They’re held together by the small things — the little routines, the tiny comforts, the quick fixes, the “thank goodness that worked” moments that keep a family running.

Day 8 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge is all about honoring those small things.

Morning Chaos, Saved by One Simple Thing

This morning started like most: Bear pacing for his walk, Pheobie glued to my hip, C looking for his phone, and David at work. Me trying to make breakfast while also hunting for the good spatula. Meanwhile, I’m standing here thinking, “If one more person says my name before the coffee is finished making…”

But then I grabbed my favorite notebook — the one I review products in, jot down ideas, and track our family chaos. Something about opening my Disney Dreams Collection by Thomas Kinkade Studios 2026 Engagement Calendar, resets my brain. It’s small, but it saves the day.

“If you need a planner that doesn’t fall apart by Wednesday, this one has been my go-to.”) Not only that I was able to purchase the planner at Walmart while doing our weekly shopping and it was a gift from David.

Gerald‘s Voice: he walked by and said, “You know what saves my day? Peace and quite and my own space. That isn’t happening in my home.

Charlie’s Voice: C chimed in later: “My small thing? When Bear actually listens the first time. ” We all laughed because… well… Bear doesn’t listen any better than Charlie although Bear didn’t leave his ears in the van like Charlie did.

The Dogs’ Contribution: Bear’s small thing is simple: a walk. Pheobie’s small thing: being next to me, always.

My Voice: I stopped by and said my small thing is “a hot meal and a quiet chair or my bed,” which honestly might be the most relatable sentence ever spoken.

Why Small Things Matter

Small things:

  • Build routines
  • Reduce stress
  • Create comfort
  • Anchor the day
  • Give us something to look forward to

They’re evergreen because they’re universal.
