Welcome to the Ultimate Blog Challenge Day 9. I wanted to share today’s post with you. “The Things We Keep Coming Back To”.
There are things we try once and forget… and then there are the things we keep coming back to. The routines, comforts, foods, tools, and habits that become part of our family rhythm. Day 9 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge is all about those “always” things — the ones that make life easier, calmer, or just a little sweeter.
In our house, these favorites show up in the smallest ways.
David’s “Always”: David always comes back to his electric skillet. He says it cooks better than anything else in the kitchen, and honestly, he’s right. That skillet has survived moves, chaos, late‑night snacks, and more gravy than I can count. If you don’t own an electric skillet, this is the one we use — affordable, durable, and basically indestructible.)
Charlie’s “Always”– C always comes back to his favorite hoodie. It doesn’t matter how many new ones he gets — that one hoodie is the one he grabs every time. It’s comfort. It’s routine. It’s part of his story because it’s the first gift Mikalya’s dad gave Charlie.
My “Always”– I always come back to my tablet and my tea. The tablet holds my books, my notes, my reviews, my ideas, and half my life. The tea always Milo’s Sweet Tea holds the rest.
The Dogs’ “Always”– Bear always comes back to his pink office chair. Pheobie always comes back to my side, no matter what room I’m in.
Gerald’s “Always”– Gerald always comes back for leftovers. And honestly? We love that about him. But if you plan on having lunch the next day you better put it up before Gerald eats it.
Why We Return to Things
We return to things because they:
- Work
- Comfort us
- Make life easier
- Reduce decision fatigue
- Feel familiar
- Anchor our routines
These “always” things are evergreen because they’re universal. Everyone has them.
Review Moment
One thing we always return to is our $5 skillet dinner — cheap, fast, and guaranteed to feed everyone without complain meals.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
