Grace by Grace: Room by Room Bathroom Reset – Creating a Peaceful Retreat One Memory at a Time

There are certain rooms in our homes that often get overlooked when it comes to decorating or it seems that way in my home. Is your home like that as well? I know when we moved into our Townhome I spent so much time thinking about my kitchen, living room, and bedroom that at times I forget the bathroom can become a peaceful retreat too.

As I continue our Grace by Grace: Room by Room series, I’ve been reminded that creating a welcoming home isn’t about having the biggest house, the newest furniture, or the most expensive decorations. It’s about filling every room with things that tell your family’s story.

For me, that story begins with a clawfoot bathtub. When I was growing up, my grandparents had a beautiful clawfoot tub in their farmhouse/ I remember when I was little trying to figure out how to climb in and out of that tub which was half the fun of taking a bath.

I can still picture it as clearly today as I could all those years ago. It wasn’t just another piece of furniture in the bathroom. It was part of the house where holidays were celebrated, stories were shared, and family gathered together. Even now, every time I see a clawfoot tub, I immediately think of my grandmother and grandfather and the love that filled their home.

Maybe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to them. In fact, David and I have already agreed on something we’ve dreamed about for years. God willing, and the creek don’t rise, one day we’ll have a clawfoot bathtub of our own. Although as I get older I’ve decided as much as I would like a clawfoot tub it might not be safe so I will get a walk in tub instead.

Even though this is one of those dreams that has stayed with us because it isn’t just about the tub itself. It’s about slowing down, creating a peaceful home, and holding onto the memories that shaped us. When Charlie buys his own home I will purchase a claw foot tub for him and he can soak in the tub for me and I will relive my dream through him.

When we first moved into our Townhome at Appian Way Townhomes, I found a beautiful two-piece bathroom canvas set. For years I couldn’t remember where I had bought it. I thought it might have come from Family Dollar or Dollar General, but when I recently looked at the back of the canvases, I discovered this 2 piece set came from Walmart.com.

Sometimes the best decorating purchases are the ones you almost forget about until they become part of your everyday life. The canvases have a simple white background featuring a gorgeous clawfoot bathtub surrounded by delicate white flowers. The neutral colors blend beautifully with almost any bathroom décor and create a calm, relaxing atmosphere without feeling busy or overwhelming.

What really captured my heart were the messages.

One canvas says:

“Happiness is a long hot bubble bath.”

Charlie and I both laughed the first time we read it because we completely agree with the message. If Suzzane were still here she would have agreed as well. As for David he might not want a bubble bath but I know he would spend hours in the tub soaking his knees and back if he could.

Did you know when Charlie was little, one of his favorite things was taking a bubble bath. I can still remember pouring Mr. Bubble Bubble Bath into the water and watching the bubbles grow while he played happily in the tub. Those weren’t expensive moments. They weren’t elaborate family vacations or picture-perfect occasions. They were simple evenings at home that became treasured memories. Just like when Suzzane was little.

Looking back now, I realize those ordinary moments were some of the most extraordinary.

The second canvas reads:

“Soak Your Troubles Away.”

Isn’t that something we all need to hear once in a while? David said bring on the tub because he is ready to soak this week away.

Life gets busy. Work piles up. Laundry waits to be folded. Dishes seem to multiply overnight. Some days bring unexpected heartache, while others simply leave us exhausted. Although a warm bath can’t solve every problem, it can give us a few quiet moments to breathe, pray, reflect, and prepare to face tomorrow.

That’s what I want our home to be. Not perfect. Not spotless every minute of every day. But peaceful. As I’ve worked through this Grace by Grace: Room by Room Bathroom Reset, I’ve realized that creating a peaceful home often happens one small decision at a time.

A fresh hand towel. A favorite candle. A bottle of bubble bath. A beautiful piece of artwork. A basket to organize toiletries. Fresh flowers. Clean counters. Each little detail works together to create a space that welcomes your family at the beginning and end of every day.

The wonderful thing is that none of those touches have to cost a fortune. Many of my favorite decorating pieces have come from everyday stores and have stayed with our family for years because they mean something to us. That’s exactly how I feel about these canvases.

Bathrooms are often the first room we visit in the morning and one of the last rooms we use before going to bed. Why not make it a place that feels peaceful? A room where you can wash away the day, enjoy a quiet moment, say a prayer, or simply breathe. For me, these little canvases do exactly that.

Every time I see that clawfoot tub, I’m reminded of my grandparents. Every time I read “Happiness is a long hot bubble bath,” I think about Charlie and Suzzane splashing in a tub full of Mr. Bubble years ago. And every time I read “Soak Your Troubles Away,” I’m reminded that God’s peace often meets us in the quiet, ordinary moments of life.
