Monday Morning Reset: Starting the Week With a Clean Slate and a Full House

Relaxation/ Rest/ Regroup/ Me-Time

Mondays don’t always arrive quietly, but they always arrive. Even on days like today when I wish it was still Sunday and I could hide in my bed. Which doesn’t count when you have a family who never thinks you need your own space but its okay because at least I have them.

Today feels less like the beginning of something new and more like the continuation of everything I was working on yesterday. The house is still settling after the weekend, laundry baskets are overflowing waiting to got to the laundry and everyone is slowly shifting from weekend mode into the routines that make our week work.

After being sick last week, I’m finding myself appreciating the ordinary parts of Monday more than usual. A week ago, I was simply trying to get through the day. Now I’m looking around the house and seeing progress instead of problems. Not everything is finished, but things are moving again, and sometimes that’s exactly what I need.

Yesterday was one of those days that reminded me how much better life feels when everyone is working toward the same goal. We spent time getting the house back in order, catching up on things that had been neglected while I wasn’t feeling well, and preparing for the week ahead. It wasn’t exciting, but it was productive. Sometimes those are the days that matter most.

David is coming off an overtime stretch at work, so today feels more like a recovery day than a highly scheduled Monday. Overtime always changes the rhythm of our household. When he’s working extra hours, everyone adjusts a little. Meals happen differently, schedules get rearranged, and the normal flow of the house shifts to accommodate whatever work requires. Now that David will be home, at his normal time we’re finding our balance again.

Charlie and Bradley are focused on preparing for their work week. There always seems to be paperwork to organize, schedules to double-check, and little details that need attention before the week officially gets underway. Watching them take responsibility for those things is one of those quiet reminders that kids grow up whether were ready for it or not.

Gerald is still sorting out his plans after the rain disrupted part of the weekend. Summer weather has a way of changing everything in a hurry. One storm can cancel plans that seemed certain only a few hours earlier. Around here, flexibility becomes a valuable skill this time of year.

As for me, I’m trying to start the week without feeling like I have to accomplish everything at once. That’s easier said than done. Especially when as a mom I know what needs done but kids are more worried about sleeping than preparing for tomorrow.

I have to remember they are grown and if they fail its on them and focus on the things I need to do not worry about what they need to do. Especially with David not feeling well last night which means dinner may fall on me which is easy since Charlie asked for Hamburgers.

Like a lot of people, I sometimes look at everything that needs to be finished and immediately start calculating how many hours it will take. There are blog posts to finish, images to organize, household projects to complete, errands to run, and a dozen little tasks that somehow appear every Monday morning.

But I’ve learned that trying to tackle everything at once usually leads to frustration instead of progress. One thing at a time works better. One load of dishes and while they are washing I can get one blog post up and one room picked up. Meaning one task is crossed off the list. By the end of the day, those small accomplishments add up to something meaningful.

The biggest lesson I’ve been learning lately is that a successful Monday doesn’t have to look perfect. It doesn’t require a spotless house, a completed to-do list, or some dramatic fresh-start moment. Sometimes success simply means showing up, doing what needs to be done, and continuing to move forward.

The house doesn’t have to be perfect. The schedule doesn’t have to be perfect. I don’t have to be perfect. Monday is simply another opportunity to begin again. As the coffee brews and the household slowly settles into its weekday rhythm, I’m grateful for the normalcy of it all.

The conversations happening in different rooms, the sounds of people getting organized, the plans being made for the week ahead—these are the moments that make up real life. They may not look exciting from the outside, but they’re the foundation everything else is built on.

So this Monday morning starts much the way many of our Mondays do: with a house full of people, a list of things to accomplish, and the understanding that not everything has to happen today. We’ll keep moving forward. We’ll keep making progress. And by the end of the week, these small Monday efforts will have been worth it. For now, that’s more than enough.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
